The Franklin Special School District Board of Education voted Monday, September 20, to extend the temporary mask requirement for all students, staff, and visitors indoors and on buses through Monday, January 11.
The Board was presented with compelling data, which showed a significant reduction in COVID positive cases of students and staff since the mask requirement was put in place. Over a two-week period, weekly positive cases have decreased by nearly 75%. In addition, the mask requirement, along with the decrease in positive cases, has enabled the district to reduce the number of students and staff excluded from school through contract tracing by 70%.
These improvements were most likely also affected by the schools' increased mitigation, including efforts such as limiting visitors and increasing social distancing in classrooms and the cafeteria. The district will continue to closely monitor the school and community data and provide regular updates for the board as it considers extensions and/or revocations of the mask requirement.
Thank you for your continued support of these efforts to keep our students and staff healthy and our schools open!
